چکیده

Active sonar performance is limited by noise, reverberation or false alarm rate (FAR). High FAR is overcome through the use of signal classification, which depends on the information content of the signals. Information content and classification are addressed using a set of broadband sonar echoes. The set of broadband echoes generated by an explosive source scattered from 30 different geographic locations is described. A continuous wavelet transform is shown that simulates the audible content of the echoes. The root-mean-square log scalogram distance, an audio distance defined with wavelet scalograms, between echoes is shown to decrease with decreasing sonar-source bandwidth. Results from multidimensional scaling (MDS), additive tree analysis, and exit interviews from a previous human subject listening study are shown. The results suggest that subjects use a process other than one defined by a single feature space. A human-subjects-research experimental protocol is described that will elucidate an alternative approach to signal classification. Funding was provided by the Office of Naval Research of the United States Navy.

Broadband Active Sonar: Implications and Constraints

The broadband sonar concept has an impact on all areas of an active sonar system. This includes the signal processing of transmit-receive signals, the response of the medium and the target response. Beginning with the definition of a broadband signal, the implications of broadband signal processing in terms of matched filtering, pulse compression, low probability of interception and beamforming...

Statistical Characterization and Classification of Fish School Clutter

This study involved a combination of investigating existing PDF's, developing a new physics-based formulation for a PDF that is matched to the problem of echo statistics due to patches of scatterers in a directional sonar beam, and applying those theoretical distributions to active acoustic data collected in the ocean. Data set #1 (scientific): This study took advantage of broadband acoustic da...

Narrowband Passive Sonar Tracking

Passive sonar sensors are the main source of information for a submerged submarine. Modern sonar systems like ISUS 90 offer a number of acoustic antennas and combined signal processing for broadband and narrowband detection and analysis of target noise. While broadband detection is often used to obtain an overview of the targets surrounding the own ship, narrowband processing enables the detect...

Broadband Mimo Sonar System: a Theoretical and Experimental Approach

MIMO systems have raised a lot of interest in the recent years. The radar community pointed out the multiple advantages of MIMO systems such as diversity gain for target detection, angle of arrival and Doppler estimation. Coherent processing also allows super-resolution for target localisation. We explore in this paper broadband MIMO sonar systems. In the current literature, the channel matrix ...

Pulse spreading and correlation loss in shallow water environments with rough sea surfaces and bottoms

Active sonar pulses suffer time-spreading, distortion, and de-correlation due to multipath propagation and reflections from rough boundaries. Correlation of the received distorted pulse with the transmitted pulse leads to degradation in pulse compression gain in comparison to the ideal case of a received pulse being simply a time-shifted, amplitude-scaled replica propagated along a single direc...
